In my art class, we usually use magazine photographs or pictures of other paintings as references for our work, but this semester, I created my first original piece of artwork, painting a scene from a photo my friend Sophie took while we were at the beach last summer. I made one for each of us, but they look similar enough that I'm only including the photo of mine.
This picture is from a calendar page I brought to class. It makes me think of the motivational saying, "Toucan do it!"
The week I picked out this reference to paint, I had just spent a few hours reconnecting with a childhood friend. Another week, I worked on this after getting together with a mentor from high school to tell her what God has done in my life and thank her for her formative influence. Associating those days with this painting makes it even more special to me.
I had extra time between a morning make-up class and my regular class hour one week, so I arranged to go spend it at the aforementioned childhood friend's house. We had a great time talking, and then relived our glory days by filming her Webkinz pig Miss Patty Poundcake in a show about doughnuts. After that, I went back and kept working on my purple mountains. This painting took multiple weeks to finish, but it's one of my favorites.
