9/24/16: King's Mountain

Last September, I made wonderful memories with my family and maternal relatives when almost all of us got together and hiked a mountain which my grandfather frequented during his adult life. I only vaguely remember hiking there with him, since I was a small child at the time, but I have many memories of hiking with him elsewhere and appreciate the way that he passed on his love of nature. It was wonderful to remember him, catch up with relatives, and have adventures.

The first adventure was a mechanical mishap. Cousin Lina and I rode with two of our uncles in the Mustang, but just minutes into the drive, the vehicle started smoking and we had to stop at a gas station.
Later, the car worked again, but as soon as we got back on the road, smoke billowed up and blew into our faces. At the next gas station, my dad drove up next to us in the minivan. He rolled down the window, looked at me and my cousin, and said, "He may have a cool car, but he can't get you where you want to go! Would you ladies like a ride?" We took him up on it.
After a third try, the uncles abandoned the Mustang on the side of the highway and took the rest of the trip in the minivan.
We made it, and had a lovely hike in beautiful weather!
On the way back, some of us hiked across the then-empty highway to return a water bottle and say goodbye to Uncle Judson and his daughter, who were about to head out with their tow truck. As traffic went by, we talked about how baffled people must be to see so many people stranded by a broken-down convertible. "They must be wondering how on earth we all fit in there... It's a clown car!"
It was a lovely day, and I'm so glad I got to spend it making memories with people I love.
