Adventuring

My friend Sophie and I went downtown today and explored the science museum, the Capitol building, and the history museum: once a homeschooler, always a homeschooler. We also took long walks around the city, seeing the sights and enjoying one another's company.

Both of us have been in the science museum many times, but this was our first experience exploring the gift shops, since our mothers avoided them like the plague on field trips. In the main shop, we had an incident with a shark:

The library in the Capitol building is lovely.
This monument honors the contributions of men and women faced with World Wars I and II. Sophie said she'd get awfully tired of holding a huge leaf over her head, but as a Doctor Who fan, I find it somewhat reassuring: if the statues come to life, this one will have a rough time getting down!

"Guaranteed: shorter hair."
The history museum is running a special exhibit about the life of Billy Graham. It was very well-done, and even though I already knew a lot about his life and impact, this taught me much more, and was very well-presented. This exhibit runs until June, in case any locals are interested.
One fact I was not familiar with was Billy Graham's role in the Civil Rights Movement. He insisted upon integrated seating at all his events and spoke openly about racial reconciliation, despite the nasty phone calls and press he received for the biblical view. Here is a quote from MLK:
Sophie the pirate!
As Sophie and I walked by a penny press machine, I said, "I always wanted to use one of those, but Mom would say, 'No, it's a waste of money!'" Sophie laughed and said it was the same for her. I stopped in my tracks as it suddenly dawned on me that we were here by ourselves, with our own money, so why not get a souvenir coin to mark this special day?

"Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art... It has no survival value; rather, it is one of those things which gives value to survival." - C.S. Lewis

"We'll be Friends Forever, won't we, Pooh?" asked Piglet.
"Even longer," Pooh answered.
